Man charged with armed robbery at Elk Grove Village motel

A Chicago man who prosecutors say has been twice convicted of burglary was ordered held on $250,000 bail Friday on charges he struck and robbed a man last month at an Elk Grove Village motel.

Kiare Johnson, 28, faces armed robbery and aggravated battery with a firearm charges in the attack, which prosecutors say took place about 3:20 a.m. May 4 at a motel on the 2800 block of Touhy Avenue.

Prosecutors say Johnson's previously charged co-defendant, Grazia de la Rosa, who works at an Elk Grove gentleman's club, arranged to meet a man at the motel that morning. When the man opened the door to his room, Johnson pointed a gun at his face and he and de la Rosa entered the room, said Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Loukas Kalliantasis. While Johnson held the semi-automatic handgun on the man, de la Rosa took his wallet, Kalliantasis said.

After the man attempted to wrestle the gun away, Johnson struck him in the back of the head, causing a bruise, Kalliantasis said.

While the men fought, de la Rosa went through the victim's pockets and took more than $300, Kalliantasis said.

According to prosecutors, Johnson was sentenced to five years in prison for residential burglary in 2014. In 2012, he was sentenced to four years in prison on the same charge. He received conditional discharge in 2011 for attempted residential burglary and two years of probation in 2008 for aggravated robbery, Kalliantasis said.

If convicted of the most serious charge, Johnson faces up to 30 years in prison.

He next appears in court on July 11.
