Ignoring the Constitution

Articles 1 and 2 of the U.S. Constitution enumerate the powers of the president and the Congress. The framers gave the president few powers, with the exception being that he would be commander in chief and have the power to fill vacancies on the Supreme Court.

Section Eight, Article One, enumerates the legislative powers of the Congress. Among the many powers are:

Congress shall have power:

• To regulate commerce with foreign nations;

• To establish a uniform rule of naturalization;

• To declare war;

• To provide for calling forth the militia to execute the laws of the union; and

• To suppress insurrections and repel invasions.

Where are the strict constructionists in the Congress who were so vocal during the debate on the Second Amendment?
