Special suburban movie screenings: 'Ghostbusters,' 'Superman' and an Icelandic gem

Two beloved blockbusters come back to big screens in the suburbs, and the After Hours Film Society presents a film from Iceland that won acclaim at last year's Cannes Film Festival. All three special screenings happen next week:

“Ghostbusters”

Yes, the 1984 classic with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson, not the remake from a few years ago that made a lot of whiny dudes on the internet very angry. It's still one of the funniest movies you could ever hope to see, and you can drink in its widescreen compositions at the AMC Rosemont 18, 9701 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., and drink up at a pre-movie party hosted by the Murray Bros. Caddyshack, 9546 Balmoral Ave., Rosemont.

It's the latest installment of the monthly Nick Digilio Film Club hosted by the titular WGN radio host. Get your $9.99 tickets for the 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, show online at amctheatres.com. Before the movie, present your ticket at Murray Bros. Caddyshack to get a 15% discount on food and drink specials. You can make reservations by calling (847) 443-3673 and mentioning the Nick Digilio Film Club.

You'll believe a man can fly when the Chicago Film Critics Association presents "Superman: The Movie" next week in Elk Grove Village.

“Superman: The Movie”

Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder made a magical pair in Richard Donner's 1978 comic book adaptation, presented Wednesday, June 12, by the Chicago Film Critics Association. Tickets for the 1 and 7 p.m. shows at the Elk Grove Theatre, 1050 Elk Grove Town Center, Elk Grove Village, cost $5 and can be purchased online at classiccinemas.com. The screenings are hosted by critic Patrick Bromley, who will also field a Q&A afterward.

Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir stars in "Woman at War," this month's presentation from the After Hours Film Society.

“Woman at War”

This Icelandic political comedy about an environmentalist who gets some unexpected news about her adoption efforts while also trying to take down the local aluminum plant boasts a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a screenwriters award from the Cannes Film Festival, and a fan named Jodie Foster, who plans to direct and star in an English-language remake.

You can get in on the ground floor at 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 10, at the Tivoli Theatre, 5021 Highland Avenue, Downers Grove. Tickets cost $10 - or $6 for After Hours Film Society members - and can be purchased at classiccinemas.com.
