Hotel-occupancy tax needed to help tourism

The DuPage Coalition for Tourism supports increased investment to enhance future economic development and tourism that will create jobs, opportunities and sales taxes for DuPage County communities.

The hospitality industry, including meetings, conventions and sporting events, is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States. But as the industry expands, so does the competition.

The Chicagoland region has seen monumental growth in hotels, and it's hurting our industry. Data shows without proactive steps, tourism will continue to drop.

DuPage has many advantages for conference delegates and offers vibrant entertainment and recreational options. New facilities are in development, such as the FMC Natatorium at Ty Warner Park that will attract regional and national competitions currently hosted outside of Illinois.

Tourism increases local sales tax by bringing visitors into our restaurants and shops. They support the brick-and-mortar stores and downtown districts that are in jeopardy around the nation.

To sustain the county's current 23,000 hospitality jobs and stay competitive, we must increase marketing and promotion.

We ask the General Assembly to support legislation giving DuPage County the option to adopt a hotel occupancy tax. This fee would only be paid by hotel guests, not residents. It would not be imposed on day meetings and banquets. Revenue would be reinvested into tourism and economic development to keep our county competitive and our industry thriving.

With greater investment, "DuMore in DuPage" will become a more recognized brand, create a competitive sports tourism program and meet the need for desirable hotel and convention business.

Simply stated, more tourism is a good thing.

We urge residents, business and leaders to join us in supporting this legislation to create jobs, support local businesses and increase municipal sales tax.

Allowing this authorization would be the first step toward making DuPage County realize these possibilities.
