Abortion stance violates church's law

I am not a Catholic, but I could not help taking notice of Kathleen Ryg's views on abortion as a Catholic in "Your views" of May 27, "Law should protect a private choice." It is obvious that Ms. Ryg cares little about the seriousness with which the Catholic Church addresses the act of abortion.

Let me quote from my Catechism Of The Catholic Church: "A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication latae sententiae," and (is) subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law.

Ms. Ryg's Catechism Of The Catholic Church might be a different printing than mine, but I am quite sure that the message is the same.

My Catechism also says, "Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life."

In not only condoning, but promoting abortion, it appears to me that Ms. Ryg runs the risk of being excommunicated from the Catholic Church, if she is not already in that state.

Again, I am not a Catholic, but can't help but wonder if Ms. Ryg and other Catholics really understand that abortion can put them outside membership in the Catholic Church.
