Mondays for kids at Elmhurst History Museum

Families looking for affordable and engaging activities this summer can make their way to the Elmhurst History Museum on select Mondays for free programming designed for elementary-age children.

Museum Maker Mondays will take place on three select dates throughout the summer from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Elmhurst History Museum, 120 E. Park Ave.

Kids and their parents or caregivers can explore the museum on a traditionally closed day, play games, complete a craft, and picnic on the grounds weather permitting. Each Museum Maker Monday program will feature a different theme. Here's a look:

• June 17: Roller Coaster Fun - Celebrate the thrill and wonder of roller coasters, an amusement-park ride that turns 135 this year. Participants will make a roller coaster-themed craft, try out marble runs, and explore the "Worlds of Wonder: Remembering Chicagoland's Amusement Parks" exhibit.

• July 22: First Moon Landing 50th Anniversary - This Museum Maker Monday, we'll recall the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969. Kids will create their own rocket ships and learn about the historic mission.

• Aug. 12: Music of the '60s - Fifty years ago in August 1969, young people converged on the small town of Woodstock, New York, for what became one of the most memorable music events of a generation. Kids will listen to music from the 1960s and make their own instruments to play along.

These drop-in programs take place in the Elmhurst History Museum's Education Center. Crafts are available while supplies last. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and no registration is required.
