A mother's plea for legal cannabis

As a mother, my three children are my top priority, period. And, as a mother, I stand in full support of legalizing recreational adult-use cannabis in Illinois.

While I recognize that the conversation surrounding this legislation is contentious, it is important to understand that cannabis is not the enemy of safety. In fact, cannabis is the means by which I am able to be a good mother and provide for my family.

Three years ago, I was fortunate enough to begin a career in the cannabis industry. In that role, I've experienced professional success and growth - growth that will continue if recreational adult-use cannabis is legalized. My job has allowed me to be the primary provider for my family and give my children the lives they deserve.

I have also been a legal patient with a cannabis prescription for the past year. With the assistance of this medicine, I am able to lead a normal life and be a better parent to my three children.

Using cannabis as a form of medicine just makes sense, and legalizing it and providing increased access should be a top priority in our state.

We cannot afford to wait. Illinois needs this legislation - now - for the betterment of our state. We have seen the positive results of legalized cannabis in other states, and we know it can keep other, harmful drugs out of our children's hands, create revenue to support vital services for families across Illinois and begin steps to reverse harm down by the WODs. The Illinois Senate has done its part. To the House: when given the chance to vote on this measure, please vote yes and make Illinois the next state to take this important step.
