The DuPage County Girls Soccer All-Area Team
J.J. Aalbue, WW South
Prior to this spring this senior all-state selection had never scored a varsity goal. Zero. This season she led the Tigers with 15 goals and added 14 assists for a team that compiled a 14-5-2 record and won a regional. Aalbue was named DuKane Conference Player of the Year. Teammate Paige Miller, last year's All-Area captain, said of Aalbue: "She's so fun to watch. She is one of the best finishers I've ever seen."
Piper Biziorek, Neuqua Valley
Named after Hollywood star Piper Laurie, Biziorek's offensive prowess made her a soccer star. The junior used her skills, athleticism and speed to challenge opponents, scoring 8 goals and offering 5 assists. "She has the ability to take a shot anywhere on the field and make it dangerous," Wildcats coach Joe Moreau said. "But she is also a very unselfish player who looks to create opportunities for her teammates whenever possible."
Megan Burling, Waubonsie Valley
This newcomer, with 27 goals and 8 assists, is an all-state and All-America selection. Her arrival this spring provided the Warriors with another tremendous playmaker. She led the DuPage Valley Conference in scoring. "Megan Burling is a special player with composure and technical ability to find the back of the net," Warriors coach Julie Bergstrom said. "She doesn't just shoot the ball, she finishes it. Megan is a great teammate and raises the level through her relentless work rate, competitiveness and humble but confident demeanor."
Abby Casmere, Benet
A four-year starter, this senior led the Redwings in scoring with 18 goals and 5 assists through the sectional final. "She has been a difference maker up front for us this year as a center forward using her combination of skill on the ball, constant energy, speed, and physicality to create goal-scoring opportunities," Redwings coach Gerard Oconer said. She'll take her stellar work ethic, versatility and strong shot with both feet to Miami University (Ohio).
Barbie Castellanos, West Chicago
As a three-year all-conference and all-sectional player, one would think that people would know of this talented senior, but she quietly went out and scored 30 goals this spring, bumping her high school totals to 63 goals and 43 assists. "Barbie is very passionate about the game, very easy to coach and has no problem sacrificing her body for a good result," Wildcats coach J. Cesar Gomez said. "She is an awesome little kid."
Amy Chiero, Glenbard East
This four-year starter helped the Rams compile an 18-5-2 record and 71 wins during her tenure. The all-sectional selection scored 12 goals and added 21 assists. "Amy is a true playmaker who can find her teammates and score goals," Rams coach Kent Overbey said. "She controlled the center of the field and was the quarterback of our attack. Her command in the midfield was the key to our success."
Nikki Coryell, Metea Valley
This all-state goalkeeper played every minute of all 22 games with the Mustangs, yielding just 19 goals. "Nikki is the most complete goalkeeper I have coached," Mustangs coach Chris Whaley said. "She is great with her feet as we play the ball out of the back, she is athletic and can handle any type of cross or shot, and she is our first junior captain in the program as her teammates recognize her strong leadership skills."
Alexa Fasone, Lisle
A leader and tremendous performer on the field with 37 goals and 13 assists and in the classroom (4.5 weighted GPA), this three-time all-Interstate Eight Conference selection and two-time captain of her squad helped the Lions take fourth place in Class 1A. "Even though she has the stats, she is a team player and foremost," Lisle coach Paul Kohorn said. "She is the first to distribute to other players after the win has been secured."
Kate Flynn, Benet
The East Suburban Catholic Catholic Player of the Year is just the third all-stater at Benet. The Redwings had 15 shutouts and 0.58 GAA through sectional play. "She is able to shut down opposing players 1 vs. 1 and is an integral part of defense," Redwings coach Gerard Oconer said. "Kate reads the game extremely well from the back and her anticipation is better than almost anybody that we have had go through our soccer program at Benet." The junior had a pair of goals and 9 assists. She is committed to Washington University in St. Louis.
Abbey Hillman, Naperville Central
The Redhawks were in just about all 21 of their games this season and 15 of them were decided by a goal or less. A lot of that defensive greed originated from this senior defender and Loyola of Chicago recruit. "Abbey has the foot skills and speed that make her a difficult matchup coming out of the back," Redhawks coach Ed Watson said. "She is deceptively strong and a fierce competitor." She scored a goal and added 6 assists.
Danielle Hopkins, Neuqua Valley
This senior all-state Missouri S&T recruit has everything you'd want in a player. "She has leadership, speed, fitness, knowledge of the game and an incredible work ethic," Wildcats coach Joe Moreau said. "Her ability to control the midfield by defending well and distributing the ball makes all of her teammates more confident." Her ability to see the entire field, spatial awareness and ability to distribute and shoot truly made her stand out. She scored 6 goals and had 3 assists.
Olivia Hurt, IC Catholic
Without a doubt the Knights are going to miss this senior who was such a key presence in the midfield this spring as well as her previous three seasons. "She had a tremendous four years at IC Catholic," Knights coach Antonio Godinez said. "Olivia's distributions of the ball and finishing were key factors to our success. She became a more tenacious defender her senior year." Hurt finished with 26 goals and 14 assists for a 15-8 sectional-winning team.
Sophia Lindquist, Wheaton Academy
This Wheaton College commit scored 19 goals and had 13 assists to lead the Warriors to Metro Suburban Conference and regional titles. "Sophie is a dynamic player and is so dangerous on top of the ball," Warriors coach Jeff Brooke said. "She is a true leader for us and constantly impacts the game with her speed, instincts, and goal scoring ability."
Hannah Martin, Naperville North
After jumping on the scene a year ago for the Huskies, this junior was a marked player this season, but that didn't stop her from having another big season. "Hannah's ability to once again produce goals and goal scoring chances made the Huskies competitive game in and game out," Huskies coach Steve Goletz said. Despite drawing keen attention from highly ranked teams, Martin still scored 16 goals and had 3 assists through sectional play.
Paige Miller, WW South
This senior's prowess on the basketball court as well as the soccer field was evident when she started walking the halls as a freshman. This Northwestern commit's numbers weren't as prolific as they've been in past years, finishing with 8 goals and 8 assists, but the results were there as the Tigers finished with 14 wins and a second consecutive regional title.
Lindsey Novak, Glenbard East
A state appearance and three regional titles in four seasons. This senior has been a key part of amazing postseason runs the last few years for the Rams, finishing her final season with all-state accolades with 26 goals and 14 assists. "Lindsey's ability to break the game open with her speed and physical play was a key to the Rams' success," Glenbard East coach Kent Overbey said.
Reilly Riggs, Naperville North
Any fears in back that Huskies coach Steve Goletz had were put to rest for the most part the past two seasons with Riggs taking care of things, business as usual, on the back line. "Reilly's competitiveness and athletic ability have made her a mainstay in the back line for the Huskies the last two seasons," he said. "The sky is the limit for her as she heads off to Northwestern this coming fall." She added 3 goals during the regular season.
Hannah Rittenhouse, St. Francis
St. Francis coach Jim Winslow acknowledged that he doesn't have exact numbers on this Iowa commit, but she finished with about 70 goals and 35 assists in high school. "She is a such a fun kind to be around," he said. "She is a terrific competitor. One of the best athletes and players that I have had the pleasure to coach." She had 15 goals and 8 assists this season.
Jordan Rose, Downers Grove South
This all-state junior midfielder helped lead the Mustangs to a second straight regional title, scoring 19 goals with 8 assists. "Jordan is very skilled and quick with the ball at her feet, allowing her to turn in tight spaces," Mustangs coach Chris Hernandez said. "This, combined with her great vision and incredible stamina, allows her to create opportunities for herself and others between the lines." The Indiana State commit could take over games at times.
Grace Setter, Waubonsie Valley
This year's captain is a third-year player whose presence proved to be huge for the Warriors with 19 goals and 11 assists. "She is an intelligent, confident, natural leader," Warriors coach Julie Bergstrom said. "She has the ability to meet people where they are, not to sweat the small stuff and raise the level." She also hates to lose more than she enjoys winning and that contagious competitiveness led the Warriors into a sectional final.
