Aurora Legion post celebrating its centennial

Roosevelt-Aurora American Legion Post 84 is celebrating its centennial and inviting the public to attend its Kick Off Centennial Celebration with the Commander.

The celebration is from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, at Ballydoyle Irish Pub, 28 W. New York St., Aurora, with complimentary hors d'oeuvres.

Post 84 has more than 300 members and meets on the second Friday of each month at Colonial Café in Aurora. Throughout the years, the Legion has been a long-standing supporter of youth baseball, the American Legion Band and Boys and Girls State in addition to co-hosting the Independence Day parade with the city. There are more Centennial Celebration events being planned throughout the year.

"There is so much that the Roosevelt Aurora American Legion Post 84 does for our veterans, including partnering with the student veteran organizations in Aurora, to be proud of," post Cmdr. Mike Eckburg said. "Sometimes we don't promote ourselves as much as we should. I would hope everyone can attend and help us kick off our Centennial celebration and become involved in helping those who proudly served our country in the armed services."

Post 84 is partnering with the Aurora Regional Chamber of Commerce in sponsoring the event.

The post was founded in 1919 and is one of the oldest in the state. The group is named in memory of Quentin Roosevelt, the youngest son of President Theodore Roosevelt, who was killed in World War I in aerial combat over France on Bastille Day, July 14, 1918.
