Softball: Grayslake North wins school-record 13th straight
Faith Standerski went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI to lead a 12-hit attack, and Grayslake North's softball team scored 11 runs in the second inning en route to an 18-3 win over visiting Mundelein in the teams' regular-season finale Saturday.
The victory was the school-record 13th in a row for the Knights (25-3), whose 25 wins ties the school record set in 2012.
Winning pitcher Ashton Moore (4 IP, 3 R, 0 ER, 4 K, 2 H, 2 BB) was 2-for-3 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI. Caitlin Barenbaum (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Grace Brown (1-for-1, double, RBI, 3 BB), Nicole Hughes (RBI), Nina Wittig (2 RBI), Evan Garret (double), and Jess Pozezinski (RBI) also had hits. Maddy Wais contributed a sacrifice fly. Nine different players had an RBI for the Knights, who take on Buffalo Grove in regional playoff action Wednesday at Warren.
Emma Umbdenstock hit a 2 run homer in the fourth inning for Mundelein. Kellie Shanahan had the other hit for the Mustangs.
Libertyville 5, Marengo 3: The Wildcats won their regular-season finale to improve to 21-7, as Maggie Evers went 3-for-4 with a double.
Aliya Haddon was 2-for-4 for Libertyville, and Lexie Hill finished 1-for-3 with a double.
Antioch 14, Elk Grove 8: Rilee Schreiner was 3-for-3 with a triple and 3 RBI, Piper Foote went 2-for-4 with a triple, double and 3 RBI, and the Sequoits won their regular-season finale.
Antioch (25-5-1) also got contributions from Ashlyn Sundell (2-for-3), Gabby Debevec (2-for-4, RBI), Abby Pyburn (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Avery Malicki (2-for-5, double, RBI) and Megan Lawrence (double, 3 RBI).
Grayslake Central 6, Vernon Hills 6: In Game 2 of a nonconference doubleheader, Madeline Peterson of Grayslake Central and Kayla Lorenz of Vernon Hills homered.
Grayslake Central (22-7-1) also got 2 hits apiece from Kennedy Stoffel (double) and Grace Bradley (triple, 4 RBI).
Vernon Hills (16-15-1) got a 4-for-4 effort from Quin Yuter, while Delaney Bowen was 2-for-3 with a triple, double and 2 RBI.
Grayslake Central 6, Vernon Hills 3: In Game of the nonconference doubleheader, Elisa Koshy was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Rams, and Avery Nims homered.
Delaney Bowen went 2-for-3 with a double for Vernon Hills.

Grayslake North 13, Lakes 12: Freshman outfielder Nicole Hughes wasn't even on the season-opening roster for Grayslake North's softball team.
Friday, her walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh gave the Knights a 13-12 win over Lakes and their first Northern Lake County Conference championship.
Faith Standerski and Jess Pozezinski both homered twice for Grayslake North (24-9, 11-1), which last won a conference title in 2012 when it played in the Fox Valley. Standerski's second solo homer of the game tied the score in the seventh, before Hughes followed with her no-doubt blast on a 3-1count with one out.
=Standerski finished 3-for-5, Pozezinski had 4 RBI, Ashton Moore was 3-for-4 with an RBI, Alyssa Carr went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, Grace Brown was 2-for-3 and Caitlin Barenbaum went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Meghan Delahunty also had a hit and an RBI.
Haley Ovaska (2-for-5, 2 RBI), Grace Goodrich (2-for-4, double, 3 RBI) and Kelsey Ulrich (2-for-3, 2 RBI) all homered for Lakes. Camryn Jones (4-for-4), Grace Dunsworth (2-for-4), Annie Willis (RBI), Ally Dietz (2 RBI), Cierra Fleming and Emilie Cain all had hits for Lakes.
Antioch 8, Wauconda 2: Piper Foote was 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI, as the Sequoits won the Northern Lake County Conference finale.
Antioch (24-5-1) got 2 hits apiece from Ashlyn Sundell, Megan Lawrence (double, 2 RBI) and Abby Pyburn. Jeri Bonaguidi allowed 1 run in a complete-game effort.
Wauconda got a double from Alexis De La Roca.
Marian Central 4, Grayslake Central 1: Madeline Peterson's homer accounted for the Rams' lone run in their nonconference loss.
Elisa Koshy was 2-for-3 for Grayslake Central (21-7).
Marengo 7, Carmel 5: Jordan Swiatkowski hit her 14th home run of the season for the Corsairs in their nonconference loss.
Swiatkowski (2 RBI), Hailie Swiatkowski and Sydney Schuda all went 2-for-3 for Carmel. Allison Novak tripled and drove in a run, and Kyla Rapplean doubled and knocked in a run.
Johnsburg 13, Mundelein 7: Kendall Klatt homered and doubled for the Mustangs in their nonconference loss.
Kellie Shanahan was 3-for-4 for Mundelein (13-14), which also got 2 his apiece from Molly Podraza (double) and Tess McKay (2 RBI).
