Northeast IN man gets 80 years for trying to kill officers

GARRETT, Ind. (AP) - A northeastern Indiana man has been sentenced to 80 years for two counts of attempted murder for shooting at police.

The (Auburn) Star reports 42-year-old Joshua D. Mumma of Garrett learned his prison term Friday after pleading guilty to those charges and to being a habitual offender under a plea agreement last month.

Prosecutors have said DeKalb sheriff's Deputy Todd McCormick was shot in his hands during the April 10, 2018, shooting following a traffic stop. Garrett Officer Alicia Castro also participated in the stop. Mumma was shot and hospitalized for several weeks.

Mumma testified, looking directly at Castro's husband and McCormick from the witness stand and saying, "I don't expect you to forgive me. What I did was unacceptable."

Castro currently is deployed to Kuwait with the military.
