Man dies after jump from cliff at northern Indiana park

LOGANSPORT, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a man has died after jumping off a cliff at a former quarry at a northern Indiana park and into water below.

The state Department of Natural Resources says kayakers heard the man yell to them from a rock ledge Wednesday afternoon about 63 feet (19 meters) above the water at France Park in Cass County before he jumped.

The kayakers tried to throw him a floatation device, but he became unresponsive. They held on to him at the surface until rescue crews arrived.

The man was taken to a beach, where he was pronounced dead. Drowning is suspected, but an official cause of death was pending. His name wasn't immediately released.

WISH-TV reports the park is a popular destination for cliff jumping despite signs warning against it.
