Baseball: Elgin pulls out 1st win in extra innings

The Elgin baseball team went extra innings to secure its first win of the season Tuesday.

Jon Palmer hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning to score Levondrick Martin with the go-ahead run, and reliever Michael Caldwell pitched a scoreless inning to save the Upstate Eight Conference win for Elgin (1-26).

Starting pitcher Kyle Coates struck out 14 and walked 2. He allowed 2 unearned runs on 4 hits in 7⅔ innings.

Reliever Dillon Skelnik absorbed the loss for Streamwood (15-14).

Batavia 8, Wheaton North 3: Brad Niedzwiedz threw a 5-hitter to lift the Bulldogs to an 8-3 DuKane Conference road win. Niedzwiedz (7-0) allowed 3 earned runs in the first inning. He then threw 4 scoreless frames to earn the victory. The senior notched 5 strikeouts and did not issue a walk. Ryan Jerger pitched 2 scoreless innings and struck out a pair to earn the save. Adam Bendoraitis and Alex Skupa each hit home runs and drove in 2 runs for Batavia (18-11).

Geneva 8, Glenbard North 3: Nick Black and Brendan Krohe hit solo home runs and Blake Breon went 3-for-4 with a double to lead a 10-hit attack. Ben Croci finished with 8 strikeouts in 5⅔ innings to complete the 3-game DuKane Conference sweep for Geneva (13-18-1).

St. Charles North 14, Wheaton Warrenville South 8: Michael Gattuso (3-for-5), Patrick Bellock and Nick DeMarco each doubled and drove in 3 runs as the North Stars salvaged the DuKane Conference series finale. Jeremy Lambel picked up the win in 2 innings of relief for St. Charles North (21-9).

Lake Park 1, St. Charles East 0: Lake Park pitchers Nic Aehlert (5⅓ innings) and Bradley Patton combined to hold the Saints scoreless on 5 hits to win in the DuKane. Left-hander Zach Clodi threw a 5-hitter with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks for St. Charles East (15-13-1).

CL South 7, Jacobs 1: Jacob Bimbi allowed a run on 2 hits and struck out five in 4⅔ innings to lift CL South (19-9). Patrick Fischer, Kyle Green, and Ian Gorken led the offense with 2 hits each. Losing pitcher Shayne NcCullough surrendered 5 runs on 9 hits over 5 innings, and struck out four for Jacobs (14-19).

Prairie Ridge 11, Cary-Grove 2: Jacob Dodge, Quinn Priester, Ben Taczy and L.J. Waco doubled but the Trojans gave up 6 first-inning runs and were outhit 12-7. Bobby Jannusch took the loss for Cary-Grove (19-11).

Burlington Central 6, Harvard 2: The Rockets scored 3 runs in each of the first two innings in this nonconference win. Jake Lenschow allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits and 2 walks in 3 innings, and Adam Payton allowed 1 hit in 4 scoreless relief innings. Colton Wallace finished 3-for-3 with a double for Central (18-11).
