Storm-damaged Muncie Fieldhouse could reopen this fall

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - One of Indiana's historic high school gymnasiums could reopen this fall nearly two years after it was badly damaged during a severe storm.

Strong winds from a November 2017 storm toppled part of the 91-year-old Muncie Fieldhouse's brick facade, damaging its roof and water pipes that released a deluge inside the building. The (Muncie) Star Press reports a new basketball floor is being installed and the school district is seeking bids to complete roof repairs.

District superintendent Steve Edwards says he hopes the fieldhouse can start hosting sports events again in September.

The district is spending $1.8 million from insurance money on the repairs but will be looking for private donations to fix a bleachers section that was unusable before the storm hit.
