More focus needed on security for women

Recently, the event "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" has caught my attention for its message to stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence. It is an international march by men to bring awareness to the struggles a woman faces in her life that males usually do not encounter.

I believe this deserves more recognition, because on twitter it was slightly mocked due to men choosing to march in red high heels. It is disappointing that in 2019 we still see people shaming others for going against gender norms especially for a topic that is so relevant to 50% of our population, women, on earth.

In relation to this movement, is the #MeToo movement for sexual assault against women, among many others. I believe we should not need as many movements as we have in our era to stop inequality and violence against women. This is something we as women and a society have been trying to overcome for centuries now; it shouldn't have to be this long of a fight.

Being a female freshman in college, I can say walking alone anywhere is a thought of terror for me, and I wish it didn't have to be that way. So I ask the leaders of my country to speak up and take action alongside the rest of the people and fight for safety and security for women. It's time for us to wake up and put an end to this injustice.
