Girls soccer: Lisle extends homestand

Lisle seniors Alexa Fasone and McKenzie Weaver played their final girls soccer game at Wilde Field on Friday.

But it wasn't their last home game. Fasone and Weaver made sure of that, combining for 6 goals as the Lions romped to a 9-0 win over Acero Garcia at the Class 1A Lisle regional final.

Lisle, which is hosting regional, sectional and supersectional action this season, advanced to face Montini in a sectional semifinal Tuesday at Benedictine University. That's also the site of a supersectional.

"It's crazy thinking it's our last game (at Wilde)," Weaver said. "It doesn't feel like it. It hasn't really set in, for me at least."

Perhaps it's because the Lions (15-1-2) are having so much fun. They have outscored their opponents 112-12, including 21-0 in their first two playoff games.

It's by far the most prolific offense Lisle coach Paul Kohorn has ever had, and the lopsided scores are a big reason why the Lions' regional title celebration was rather subdued.

"It's a little anticlimactic," Kohorn said. "We're just having one of those types of season where everything we do is golden.

"All season long, no matter what we do, we're scoring goals and we're stopping (opponents) from scoring goals."

That was the case again against Garcia, which got the ball over midfield only once in the first half, which ended with Lisle ahead 8-0. The Lions outshot Garcia 26-0, scoring on three straight shots at one point.

Fasone tallied 4 goals and 1 assist. Weaver had 2 goals. Tara Kane, Emma Fasone and Gabrielle Sojka also scored.

"We just kept up our effort and we like scoring goals," Alexa Fasone said. "We just kept passing the ball around.

"We tried to get as many people as we can to score. That's kind of been our goal."

But not their ultimate goal.

"Our goal is a state championship," Fasone said. "It's not unattainable for us.

"We definitely know that if we play our best soccer, we can make it there."

Kohorn, who guided the Lions to state semifinal appearances in 2010 and 2012, does not doubt it. The fact that none of the five seniors is playing in college gives them added incentive.

"I think this team is pretty focused on the endgame right now," Kohorn said. "We've talked about how they're coming to the end of their careers and some of them are kind of scared and sad, but they want to keep this going as long as they can and if they keep playing like this, the sky is the limit."
