Softball: Brown's walk-off homer rallies Grayslake North

Grace Brown hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Grayslake North's softball team beat Grant 8-7 in walk-off fashion Thursday to hit 20 wins and remain in sole possession of first place in the Northern Lake County Conference.

The game was played at Grant, but Grayslake North was the home team on the scoreboard after its field was unplayable.

Grayslake North (20-9, 10-1) trailed 6-1 entering the fifth before scoring 5 runs to tie the game. Brown (3-for-3) also had a double. Freshman Nicole Hughes (1-for-3) hit a 3-run shot in the fifth. Faith Standerski (2-for-5, triple), Jess Pozezinski (RBI), Ashton Moore, Meghan Delahunty (RBI) and Scout Kram had hits as well for the Knights. Standerski led off the bottom of the eighth with a triple before scoring on Brown's blast.

Kram earned her second win in relief in as many days, throwing 4⅓ innings while giving up 1 run to go along with 4 strikeouts and 2 hits.

Calista Warmowski (4-for-4) had a homer and 3 RBI for Grant. Gabby Rogalevich was 2-for-3 with a double, triple and an RBI. Sarah Gallivan also doubled for the Bulldogs, and Miranda Rodriguez knocked in 2 runs.

Warren 7, Carmel 4: Caitlyn Britton hit a 3-run homer, her 15th of the season to go along with 51 RBI, as the Blue Devils won the nonconference game.

Carissa Topolinksi also homered for Warren (18-4), which has hit 56 home runs this season. Britton earned the win to improve to 9-2.

Carmel (18-8) got a solo homer from Jordan Swiatkowski, her 13th of the season. Allie Schiltz was 2-for-3 for the Corsairs, and Brooke Braden had a 2-run double.

Carmel will play Mundelein under the lights at Community Park at 7 p.m. Friday in the Crosstown Showdown.

Grayslake Central 5, Round Lake 3: Kennedy Stoffel doubled, Madeline Peterson struck out seven in 6 innings, and the Rams won in Northern Lake County Conference action.

Sam Nicoline and Lina Navarrete both went 2-for-3 for Round Lake, which got doubles from Emily Etherington and Sydney Verastegui.

Mundelein 15, Zion-Benton 1: Cheyenne Pellettiere hit a grand slam and collected 5 RBI, Kendall Klatt had a homer, double and 4 RBI, and the Mustangs cruised in North Suburban Conference action.

Mundelein (13-10) got 2 hits apiece Pellettiere, Klatt, Danielle Lambert, Molly Podraza, Mia Arnoux and Emma Halin.

Antioch 17, Lakes 7: Abby Pyburn was 3-for-3 with 4 RBI, Ashlyn Sundell went 3-for-5 with 3 stolen bases and 2 RBI, and the host Sequoits beat their district rival in Northern Lake County Conference action.

Antioch (22-4, 7-3) also got contributions offensively from Piper Foote (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 3 stolen bases), Rilee Schreiner (2-for-4, double, RBI), Avery Malicki (2-for-4, double, 2 RBI), Faith Miller (3-for-4, 2 RBI) and Hailey Webb (double).

Lakes got 2 hits apiece from Camryn Jones (2 RBI) and Allie Dietz (3 RBI). Dietz tripled and doubled. Jones and Grace Dunsworth also had doubles for the Eagles.

Vernon Hills 7, Maine East 4: The Cougars scored 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull out the Central Suburban League game.

Brooke Pieper hit a solo homer and singled for Vernon Hills (14-11, 7-2). Madison Johnson had a triple and 2 RBI, and Rachel Wright contributed a double.
