Former Furman football coach Jimmy Satterfield has died

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Jimmy Satterfield, who led Furman to the 1988 NCAA Division I-AA football championship, has died. He was 79.

The school released a statement saying Satterfield died Monday after a brief illness.

Satterfield spent 21 seasons on Furman's coaching staff, the last eight as head coach from 1986-93. He was 66-29-3 during his time leading the Paladins. His crowning achievement came in 1988 when Furman went 13-2 and won the NCAA title, a division now classified as the Football Championship Subdivision.

Satterfield won three straight Southern Conference title from 1988-90.

After leaving Furman, Satterfield was head coach at Lexington (South Carolina) High School from 1996-2003.

Furman coach Clay Hendrix says it is a sad day for Paladins' football, adding that Satterfield "had an incredible impact on so many young men."
