Truck driver faces 2 infractions in crash that killed 2 kids
BRAZIL, Ind. (AP) - Western Indiana authorities have filed two civil infractions against a Canadian semitrailer driver for a 2017 crash that killed two children.
Amritpal Singh of Quebec, Canada, is accused of following too closely and driving too fast for the conditions.
He's scheduled for a June 10 court hearing on the infractions, each of which carries a maximum penalty of $500, with no possibility of jail time.
The Tribune-Star reports that Clay County Prosecutor Emily Bookwalter Clarke had consulted with the Indiana Prosecuting Attorney's Council on how local jurisdictions can summons a Canadian citizen.
Singh was traveling along Interstate 70 in July 2017 when his truck hit a van driven by Christina Bereda O'Fallon, Illinois, in backed-up traffic. Her 1-year-old son, Brennen Bereda and 1-year-old daughter, Finley Bereda, were killed.
