Baseball: Volpe's 'slam' powers Lakes past Antioch
Jason Volpe's grand slam in the top of the sixth inning broke a 4-4 tie and lifted Lakes to an 8-6 win over host Antioch in Northern Lake County Conference baseball action Saturday.
Volpe also doubled and finished 3-for-4 with 5 RBI, as the Eagles (8-12, 5-4) avenged Friday's 10-4 loss on the same field. Lakes will host Antioch in the rubber game of the series on Monday.
Chance Andell was 3-for-5 with a double and 2 RBI for Lakes. Winning pitcher Logan Mueller pitched 5 innings, allowing 6 runs but only 2 of which were earned. Ethan Clark threw the final 2 innings for the save, giving up 1 hit and 1 walk, while striking out three.
Antioch (11-9, 6-5) got a single and 2 RBI from Logan Delgado. Vince Roszkowiak had a double for the Sequoits.
Vernon Hills 17, Niles North 2: The Cougars earned the Central Suburban League North Division win in six innings, as Michael Moore allowed 2 runs and 5 hits over 5 innings with 6 strikeouts and 4 walks.
After failing to score in the first, Vernon Hills put up crooked numbers in each of the next five frames. Quinn Geren doubled twice, and Caleb Thomson and Ethan Bowers (double) also had multiple hits. Jake Morris (double) and Josh Liu each reached base safely four times. Danny Wizceb drove in 3 runs for the Cougars (5-5 CSL).
Warren 5, McHenry 1: The Blue Devils captured the nonconference game to stretch their winning streak to 19 games.
Nate Rentas and Brandon Houtz (2 RBI) were both 2-for-3 for Warren (22-2). Rentas, Mikey Kocen, Bradley Vondruska and Brian Rapanan (2 RBI) all doubled, and Dru Jasnoch earned the win to improve to 6-1.
Joliet Catholic 4, Carmel 3: The host Hilltoppers scored a walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth inning of the East Suburban Catholic Conference game.
Jake Adams and Lukas Galdoni were both 2-for-4 for Carmel (11-4, 6-3).
Round Lake 4, North Shore Country Day 3: Angel Cueves' walk-off RBI in the bottom of the eighth gave the Panthers the nonconference win.
Gio Cirelli pitched all 8 innings for Round Lake, allowing 3 hits and no earned runs with 8 strikeouts and 2 walks. Conner Lee was 1-for-3 with 2 RBI for the Panthers. Cueves finished 2-for-5.
Stevenson 5, New Trier 2: Four pitchers - Hayden Brotz, Nick Wang, Jacob Rosenkranz and Nick Brueckert - combined on a 3-hitter, as the host Patriots won the nonconference game.
Chris Farina was 3-for-3 for Stevenson (17-6), Michael D'Angelo had a single and 2 RBI, and Drew Ruchim contributed a double.
Barrington 6, Lake Zurich 4: Matt Flaherty had a double for the Bears, who fell to 13-8 with the nonconference loss.
