Man convicted of murder in 2 slayings in southwest Indiana

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - A 24-year-old man has been convicted of murder and robbery in the 2017 slayings of two people in southwest Indiana.

The Journal & Courier reports jurors reached the verdict Wednesday night in the case against Deshay Hackner of Evansville. Jurors on Thursday were to consider whether to recommend life in prison for the deaths of 29-year-old Dewone Broomfield and his girlfriend, 28-year-old Mary Woodruff.

They were killed in Evansville in Vanderburgh County, but the trial was moved to Lafayette in Tippecanoe County following pre-trial publicity.

Vanderburgh County Deputy Prosecutor Kevin McDaniel told jurors that before he died Broomfield told authorities that Hackner shot him.

Defense attorney Conor O'Daniel suggested in closing arguments that William Rice II was responsible. Rice is awaiting trial on murder and robbery charges.
