Police: Bail violation led to Elk Grove Village standoff
Elk Grove Village police say a man wanted on an arrest warrant tried to avoid officers who recognized him Tuesday, leading to a standoff after he fled to his home Tuesday afternoon.
Jose A. Mendoza, 30, of the 0-100 block of Evergreen Street in Elk Grove Village, was wanted for violation of bail bond connected to an April 15 incident at a bar in which he was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and possession of a concealed-carry firearm while intoxicated, Deputy Police Chief Michael Gaspari said.
Gaspari credited the officers for recognizing Mendoza as he stood outside his house about 1:10 p.m. Tuesday and knowing he was wanted. The warrant alleged Mendoza violated his bail conditions by failing to turn over his firearms to authorities.
"We're very proud of the work that they did out there," Gaspari said Wednesday.
Police said Mendoza fled from the officers, went into his Evergreen Street house and refused to come out. Officers established a perimeter around the home and received assistance from the regional Northern Illinois Police Alarm System.
Mendoza emerged from the home about 2:30 p.m. and was seized without incident, authorities said. Gaspari said additional charges related to the standoff are not expected.
Police sent an online alert to notify the neighborhood about the standoff. Authorities also alerted officials at Elk Grove Township Elementary District 59 and Rupley Elementary School in the area because student dismissal time was approaching and several streets were blocked off.
Police from Wood Dale, Itasca, Addison, Rolling Meadows and Roselle also assisted Elk Grove Village.
Gaspari said Mendoza initially was charged after he was accused of drinking alcohol and shooting a weapon into the air between 8 and 11 p.m. April 15, behind a bar near East Higgins Road and Lively Boulevard in Elk Grove.
He's charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and possession of a concealed-carry firearm while intoxicated.
