Girls soccer: Round Lake nets school-record 12th win
Dana Devera's second-half penalty kick was the difference Tuesday night, as Round Lake's girls soccer team edged host Grayslake Central 2-1 to set the single-season school record for wins and remain undefeated in Northern Lake County Conference play.
Claudia Hernandez scored off an assist from Kimberly Salgado in the first half to give the Panthers (12-2-1, 4-0-1) a 1-0 lead. Grayslake Central pulled even in the second half, before Devera put the visitors back in front. Round Lake keeper Giselle Raygoza made 6 saves.
"These girls played with heart and never gave up after the equalizer," Panthers coach Josue Jimenez said. "Great effort overall as a team on a well-deserved win."
Maura Fitzgerald scored for Grayslake Central.
Wauconda 7, North Chicago 0: Oceanna Pfeiffer and Dakota Thompson each scored twice for the host Bulldogs in the Northern Lake County Conference match.
Tara Bierdz, Katie Karecki and Jordan Bodden also scored for Wauconda (11-2-2, 4-0-1). Belle Johnson, Thompson, Abigail McHugh, Karecki and Bodden had assists. Mackenzie Arden and Emma Miller shared the shutout in net.
Grayslake North 7, Grant 0: Lauren Hansen scored twice and added an assist, Emily Dusek assisted on three goals, and the visiting Knights won in Northern Lake County Conference action.
Grayslake North (6-5-3, 4-0-2) also got goals from McKenna Brooks, Amy Knoebl, Nicole Lacke, Willow Silverman and Emily Hansen. Jordyn Gerdes, Brooks and Nicole Lacke also had assists.
"Happy with tonight's performance," Knights coach Adam DeCaluwe said. "Playing 5 games in 6 days, against several strong teams, our girls came out and played very well as a team. The girls moved the ball with pace and purpose, and we were not only able to create quality chances, but we managed to finish them as well."
Warren 3, Lake Zurich 1: The host Blue Devils got goals from Courtney Chomko, Athena McGinn and Cate Cullison in the North Suburban Conference match.
Cullison, Elizabeth Weinberg and Olivia Wolf had assists Alana Turner started in goal for Warren (9-6-2, 2-1-1) and had 2 saves in the first half. Sarah Barbosa made 6 saves in the second half for the Blue Devils, who will host Stevenson on Thursday for Senior Night.
Rachel Krueger scored for Lake Zurich (9-6-1, 2-2) off an assist from Cassidy Johnston. Bears keeper Paige Grossenbacher made 4 saves.
Stevenson 9, Waukegan 0: Abby Kalou had 4 goals and 3 assists, and the Patriots improved to 15-1-2 and 5-0 in the North Suburban Conference with their 10th win in a row and eighth consecutive shutout.
Emma Ramagnano added a pair of goals. Krissy Hill, Gabi Nyc and Nicole Schmidt also scored. Nyc, Jess Baiggoria, Nikki Kolze, Myah Schoolman, Gracie Wingfield and Alyssa Bende also had assists. Jenny Staten recorded her 12th shutout in 18 appearances.
"Abby Kalou showed she was the hungriest shark on the field with a constant attack," Stevenson coach PepeJon Chavez said. "It's straight back to work for the girls, who close conference with two talented conference opponents, and we know we must be at our best."
Glenbrook North 2, Vernon Hills 0: Cougars keeper Daniella Jarrell made 8 saves, but the Cougars fell to 5-6-5 and 1-3-1 in the Central Suburban League North Division.
"We played well enough to win," Vernon Hills coach Mike McCaulou. "We created chances but we have struggled to find the back of the net."
