Coppock's legacy: Sox, sports talk

I just wanted to add on Chet Coppock's passing that his most significant contribution to Chicago sports was to beat the drum for the White Sox staying in Chicago when Jerry Reinsdorf had given the city an ultimatum date of midnight that night or else they would be the St. Petersburg White Sox, Chet beat the drum on his show for three hours and he helped turn the tide for the White Sox to stay here, I give him a "save" for that effort.

Also, Coppock was bombastic, yes, but he got good guests. when the main stations only covered the major teams, he had a live interview on the Monday night after Ben Crenshaw won the Masters, for example.

And while Chet might be the godfather of Chicago Sports Talk Radio, it was Bill Gleason From The Chicago Sun Times' idea. Gleason used to say on the Sports Writers Show, that sports talk shows should be "the way fans talk in their taverns, they don't talk sports, they argue sports."

I even listened to the Score here almost full-time in the beginning, when it was a sports station.
