Softball: Pozezinski leads Grayslake North past Grayslake Central
Jess Pozezinski went 3-for-3 with her second homer of the season and 2 RBI, and Grayslake North avenged an earlier-season loss with a 9-6 win over visiting Grayslake Central in Northern Lake County Conference softball action Thursday.
Grayslake North improved to 15-9 and 6-1 in the NLCC, while Grayslake Central fell to 13-4 and 5-2.
Grayslake North freshman Nicole Hughes (3-for-4, 3 RBI, double) just missed a home run after it hit the top of the fence and bounced back into play. Faith Standerski (double), Grace Brown (RBI, 2 walks), Alyssa Carr (RBI) and Meghan Delahunty (RBI) all had hits for the Knights. Freshman Gianna Certa earned the complete-game victory, giving up 10 hits, 5 walks (1 intentional) and 8 strikeouts.
Grayslake Central's Elisa Koshy (3-for-4, 3 RBI) hit a no-doubt, 3-run blast in the fifth. Freshman Rachel Smigielski (1-for-3, 3 RBI) also hit a 3-run blast in the seventh to keep the game close. Kennedy Stoffel (3-for-3, walk), Grace Bradley (2-for-3, walk) and Ashlynn Coleman all had hits for the Rams.
Wauconda 3, Grant 2: Wauconda scored twice in the top of the fifth to pull even and then plated the winning run in the sixth of the Northern Lake County Conference game.
Kayla Serio went the distance in the circle for Wauconda, allowing 6 hits with 10 strikeouts and 2 walks. Serio and Taylor Koehler had the only hits for Wauconda against Grant starting pitcher Juliana Reynolds, who also struck out 10 in her 7 innings. Julia Fohlmeister had an RBI for Wauconda.
Grant got 2-for-4 efforts from both Sarah Gallivan and Calista Warmowski (double).
Antioch 4, Round Lake 1: Rilee Schreiner pitched a 3-hitter, allowing no earned runs with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks.
Megan Lawrence (RBI) and Avery Malicki were both 2-for-4 for Antioch (18-1-1, 6-1).
Vernon Hills 10, Highland Park 7: The Cougars improved to 9-10 and 4-1 in the Central Suburban League, as Madison Johnson went 3-for-4.
Rachel Wright was 2-for-3 with a double, and Rebecca Kieft went 2-for-4.
Stevenson 17, Waukegan 2: Haley Barnes was 3-for-3 with a homer, 2 doubles, home run and 5 RBI for the Patriots, who won the North Suburban Conference game in four innings.
Elle Ruchim (4 runs scored, triple) also was 3-for-3 for Stevenson. Maggie Trotter went 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI, Lexi Gitler had a double and an RBI, and Maggie O'Brien tripled.
Libertyville 5, Carmel 0: Amanda Page fired a complete-game 5-hitter, striking out 13 and walking two to lead the Wildcats to the nonconference win.
Page also had a single and an RBI, while Maggie Evers homered and drove in a pair of runs.
Carmel got 2 hits from Allie Schiltz.
