Free, family-friendly Earth Day Party in Schaumburg

Nearly 49 years after the first Earth Day, Schaumburg Park District continues its support of environmental protection while creating a fun and family-friendly party to celebrate Mother Nature!

Earth Day Party is a free, all-ages event sponsored by the Spring Valley Nature Club. The event will take place on Sunday, April 28 from noon to 4 p.m. at Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road.

There will be plenty of activities to encourage curious minds to connect with the environment. For a small fee, participants may build a birdhouse and construct a worm compost. Free activities include a live hawk and owl display, games, crafts and more. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

"We have a duty to leave earth better than we found her for future generations to enjoy," said Dave Brooks, manager of conservation services. "We created a fun, family-friendly event that encourages children to find joy in the nature that surrounds them, while also teaching them how to protect and interact with it."

Earth Day was founded in 1970 by Gaylord Nelson, former senator of Wisconsin, to address the environmental crisis happening across the nation. His efforts lead to 20 million Americans demonstrating across the U.S., pushing environmental issues to the forefront and leading to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Earth Day is now celebrated annually worldwide, with events in more than 193 countries.
