Baseball: Fremd slugs its way past Palatine

In the big crosstown baseball rivalry, Fremd outhit Palatine to earn an 8-3 Mid-Suburban League West victory Tuesday.

The Vikings pounded out 13 hits while Palatine managed just 4 hits.

Leading the way for Fremd was Brent Swenson, who had 3 hits and drove in 2 runs. Nick Rattin, Austin Higgins and Connor Giusti all had 2 hits and Giusti also drove in 2 runs. Meanwhile, Will Josten smacked a home run for the Vikings.

Winning pitcher Will Cai came up with 3 strikeouts for Fremd, which improves to 11-7 on the season and 6-1 in the MSL.

For Palatine (10-10-1, 3-4), Danny Hopper, Tyler Pecson and Luka Popovic each drove in a run.

Barrington 16, Hoffman Estates 5: Barrington scored 6 runs in the seventh inning to finish with a bang in this MSL West game. The Broncos (17-4, 6-1) got a big-time blast from John Seagrist, who drove in 4 runs with a grand slam home run. Johnny Podlesnik drove in another 2 runs with a home run of his own while A.J. Christoffer drove in 3 runs and Nate Gazda drove in 2 runs. Winning pitcher Max Raynor had 3 strikeouts. For Hoffman Estates (1-14-2, 0-6), Kyle Krogstad and Jim Kliver each had 2 hits.

Wheeling 4, Conant 3: Wheeling scored 2 runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally for the win. Winning pitcher Matthew Patterson went the distance and struck out 5 with just 1 walk for Wheeling (9-9, 4-3). He also had 2 hits, as did Jeremy Kim, Andy Shover and Michael Best, who drove in the game-winning run. Conant (4-14, 1-6) got 2 hits apiece out of Christian Seegers, Keegan Brandt and Xander Leary.

Harvest Christian 20, Schaumburg Christian 1: Adam Bruck drove in the only run for Schaumburg Christian (1-5).

Highland Park 5, Maine East 1: Ashton Schwab hit a triple to drive in the only run for Maine East (1-10).

Downers Grove South 6, Leyden 5: Leyden took the loss despite rolling up 13 hits. Alex Duarte and Uli Hernandez each had 3 hits for the Eagles (8-8) while Jose Solis and Danny Determann each had 2 hits. All four players each had a double.

Maine West 8, Deerfield 1: Justin Scholler had 3 hits and drove in 2 runs while Enrique Melendez had 2 hits and drove in 2 runs for Maine West, which improves to 8-9-1. Anthony Salemi and David Roscoe each added 2 hits as well for the Warriors. Winning pitcher Nick Hernandez had 3 strikeouts over five innings.

Maine South 4, Niles North 1: Maine South improved to 14-7 with the win, keyed by a 4-run fifth inning. Timmy O'Brien drove in 2 runs for the Hawks. TJ Fleita was the winning pitcher.

Notre Dame 3, St. Viator 1: Notre Dame outhit St. Viator 8-3 to get the win. James Gorman led the Lions (10-6) with a double.
