Baseball: Batavia edges Glenbard N.; Aversa wins 300th
Brady King hit a bases-loaded, walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Batavia past Glenbard North 2-1 in the DuKane Conference Tuesday.
King's game-winner was the third hit of the game for Batavia (8-5, 2-2). It made a winner of reliever Ian Konsbruck, who pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Batavia starting pitcher Brad Niedzwiedz held Glenbard North (7-5, 1-3) to an earned run on 3 hits and a walk and struck out 8 in 6 innings.
Kaneland 9, Yorkville 6: Kaneland coach Brian Aversa won his 300th career game after the Knights erupted for 6 runs in the top of the sixth inning to erase a 4-run deficit in the opening game of a 3-game Northern Illinois Big XII East series. Angel Acevedo (2-for-5) tripled and drove in 2 runs and Alex Buchanan lasted 6⅔ innings and struck out 5 for Kaneland (11-7, 3-1).
Hampshire 6, Dundee-Crown 3: Ben Benoit allowed just 3 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits and 2 walks in 4⅔ innings to earn the win for Hampshire (9-5, 4-4), which got 2 hits from Matt Jachec. Matt Ward took the loss for Dundee-Crown (4-11, 0-7).
Cary-Grove 5, CL South 2: Quinn Priester snapped a 2-2 fifth-inning tie with a two-out, RBI single, and winning pitcher Jack Wenninger held the Gators to 2 earned runs on 5 hits and a walk for Cary-Grove (10-4, 4-2). Beiker Fuentes took the loss in relief for Crystal Lake South (8-5, 4-5).
Burlington Central 6, Jacobs 4: Ethan Krieger went 2-for-4 and broke a 4-4 fifth-inning tie with a run-scoring single to lift the Rockets in nonconference play. Winning pitcher Andrew Knowlton allowed 4 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits and a walks and struck out 3 in 5 innings. Jake Lenschow pitched 2 scoreless innings with 3 strikeouts to earn the save for Central (7-7). Losing pitcher Andrew Balkcom allowed 5 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits, walked 2 and struck out 5 in 4⅓ innings for Jacobs (6-10).
Chicago Christian 4, St. Edward 0: Mike Lopez, Drew Tilche and Joe Sacco managed the singles in a Metro Suburban Blue loss for St. Edward (7-9, 3-5).
Elgin Academy 9, North Shore Country Day 1: Reece Zonts doubled, tripled and drove in 6 runs to lead Elgin Academy (8-4, 4-0) in the Independent School League. Ethan Hill did not allow a hit, walked one and struck out 9 in 4 innings.
Streamwood 7, Bartlett 2: Bartlett outhit the Sabres 10-3 but committed 7 errors while Streamwood played error free to win the rubber game of the Upstate Eight series. Scott Wolfard drove in 2 runs and winning pitcher Anthony Caruso held the Hawks to an earned run on 6 hits and 2 walks and struck out 4 in 4 innings for Streamwood (7-7, 5-4). Nate Gargano took the loss for Bartlett (5-5-1, 4-5).
East Aurora 9, Larkin 0: Tayshon Erdman doubled but Larkin (1-13, 1-8) was limited to 3 hits in this Upstate Eight loss. Winning pitcher Andrew Camis struck out 9 in 6⅔ innings for East Aurora (6-7, 5-4).
West Aurora 5, West Chicago 5: This Upstate Eight game was called due to darkness after nine innings. Danny Marion hit a fourth-inning inside-the-park home run and Graham Rachow followed with a solo home run for West Aurora (10-4-1, 6-2-1).
