Bethlehem Lutheran to host annual rummage sale May 2-4

Bethlehem Lutheran Church in West Dundee will kick off its annual rummage sale on Thursday, May 2, starting with a popular special jewelry sale from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church, off Fourth and Main streets.

The regular rummage sale begins from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday; and continues from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, May 3; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 4.

This is more than just your run-of-the-mill rummage sale, it is a community event. This one is a humdinger, one of the best rummage sales in the area.

A lot of hard work is put into this sale so that everything will be laid out in an orderly fashion. The neighborhood not only shops at this rummage sale but they look forward to visiting with others who have attended this event year after year for decades.

For this sale, there are three areas to shop. The first is the big room, the second is the upscale room and the third is the garage. The big room has everything including books, toys, clothes, dishes, shoes, hats, handbags, and other things too numerous to mention.

The upscale room has jewelry, paintings, antiques, collectibles and specialty items. In the garage you will find lounge chairs, desks, beds, sleds, fishing gear, tools and all that house and manly stuff.

On Saturday, there will be the customary bag sale. Since this is one of the first rummage sales of the season, a big turnout is expected.

The yearly rummage sale is put on by Bethlehem's Women's Guild. All of the proceeds from the sale are used to fund their mission projects, including Orphan Grain Train, FISH Food Pantry, St. Matthew's Soup Kitchen (Chicago), Sisterhood of Stitchers, Lutheran Women's Missionary League Mites, St. Alexius NeoNatal Unit, Thursday Morning Sewing Group, Heifer International, Romanian Orphanage Mission Trip, veterans, the church youth group, Mongolia Missions, Walcamp, and more.

They accept from the public or businesses all kinds of donated clean items that are new or in good repair, including household items, holiday decorations, toys, knickknacks, jewelry, clothing, sporting equipment, furniture, books, linens, blankets, craft supplies, tools, dishes, collectibles, etc. (No outdated electronics or bulky old-style televisions.)

They are also in need of brown paper grocery bags, plastic bags (grocery or larger), jewelry boxes, and coat hangars (wire is fine).

You can bring things to the church the week after Easter. The church will be open on Monday to Thursday, April 22-25, between 9 a.m. and noon. Let the church office, (847) 426-7311, know you are coming.
