Police: Man dead in gunfire involving deputy fired first

NEW CASTLE, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a 32-year-old man who died after an exchange of gunfire with a sheriff's deputy along Interstate 70 in eastern Indiana didn't have a license for the handgun he was carrying.

State police issued an update on the ongoing investigation Thursday, saying Michael R. Gulley of Greenfield fired a shot from his gun Tuesday morning before the deputy returned fire. They say Gulley was in possession of methamphetamine at the time and was on probation for a drug case in Hancock County.

State police say dispatchers in Henry County received a call about a suspicious person walking along the interstate and the deputy found Gulley in the median. Police say the deputy approached him to see if he needed assistance before the shooting. The sheriff's deputy wasn't injured.
