Lawsuit: Hospital pressured Peoria woman to have abortion
PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - A Peoria woman is suing a central Illinois hospital, saying it paid her $2,000 to have an abortion after it mistakenly administered her a drug that could cause birth defects.
The (Peoria) Journal Star reports Reneizha Morris' suit was filed Thursday in Peoria County Circuit Court against UnityPoint Health-Methodist hospital. The 23-year-old is seeking more than $50,000 in damages.
The suit claims Morris didn't want the abortion but felt pressured by the hospital's risk management team. Her attorney, Thomas Mulroy III, says the hospital wanted to "eliminate evidence of their mistake."
Morris says she was given Methotrexate after she was admitted for a psychiatric evaluation when she was early in her pregnancy. The lawsuit alleges the hospital's legal team got involved when she decided to carry the child to term.
Methodist spokesman Fabiola Orozco said the hospital doesn't comment on pending litigation.
