Car in crash that killed firefighter was fleeing police

CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) - St. Louis County police now say that an off-duty firefighter from Illinois was killed by a car fleeing police.

The crash on April 4 happened when a Camaro driven by a 21-year-old man struck a Chevrolet Cruze driven by 30-year-old Swansea firefighter Brett Korves, a married father of an 18-month-old son.

Police Sgt. Benjamin Granda told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Friday that he didn't know why the officer tried to stop the Camaro, or whether the officer reported the attempted stop to supervisors.

Granda says the car fled but investigators "do not believe there was a pursuit."

The Camaro driver was arrested the day of the crash on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter. He has not been charged.

A spokesman for Korves' family declined comment.
