Recycling company plans plastics-to-fuel plant in NE Indiana

ASHLEY, Ind. (AP) - A recycling company plans to build a $260 million plant in northeastern Indiana that will convert plastics into fuels and waxes for industrial uses.

San Francisco-based Brightmark Energy announced Thursday it will break ground next month on the plant, which is expected to create 136 full-time jobs when it opens in 2021.

The Journal Gazette reports the company says the operation in the Steuben County town of Ashley will be the first of its kind in the U.S. and use plastics from curbside recycling pickup in Indiana and Illinois, and from manufacturing waste.

Initial estimates call for it to produce in its first year more than 18 million gallons (68 million liters) of ultra-low-sulfur diesel and naphtha blend stocks and nearly 6 million gallons (22 million liters) of commercial-grade wax.
