Prosecutor: Naperville police-involved shooting justified
NAPERVILLE, Ill. (AP) - Prosecutors have ruled that a Naperville police officer acted appropriately when he shot a man who pointed what police thought was a real gun at them but was later determined to be a pellet gun.
DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said Wednesday that no criminal charges will be filed against Officer Jordan Koziel for the Jan. 23 shooting . Authorities say Koziel shot 27-year-old Zachery Kelley of Naperville in his shoulder and knee.
Authorities say officers were responding to a report of a man allegedly harassing a woman. They say officers tried to calm Kelley before he pointed the weapon at them.
Kelley was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is held in the DuPage County jail on bond. He has pleaded not guilty to three felony counts of aggravated assault to a police officer.
