Elk Grove Village touts low cost of living for residents

A 2019 survey of seven Northwest suburban communities shows that Elk Grove Village provides the lowest cost of living for residents, Elk Grove officials said in a news release Wednesday.

The annual cost-of-living survey is intended to account for the entire range of municipal taxes and fees that impact residents, officials said, including property, sales and natural gas taxes; cable franchise fees; waste/recycling services; water/sewer rates; and various other costs.

According to the survey, those costs total $9,539 per year in Elk Grove. Arlington Heights was second, at $9,987, followed by Des Plaines ($10,026), Schaumburg ($10,050), Mount Prospect ($10,154), Palatine ($10,268), Hoffman Estates ($11,170) and Rolling Meadows ($11,538).

The village credited the lower cost to its robust business climate.

"Elk Grove Village is dedicated to serving our residents and we are proud to offer an incomparable quality of life in an affordable community," Mayor Craig Johnson said in the news release.
