Augsburg fires coach Baum and staff, turns to Martin Schmidt

AUGSBURG, Germany (AP) - Augsburg fired coach Manuel Baum on Tuesday and turned to former Mainz and Wolfsburg coach Martin Schmidt to save it from Bundesliga relegation.

The club also sacked Baum's assistant coach Jens Lehmann and technical director Stephan Schwarz.

Augsburg is just four points above Stuttgart in the relegation playoff after two straight defeats in the league - 3-0 at struggling Nuremberg followed by Sunday's 4-0 loss at home to Hoffenheim.

Augsburg managing director Stefan Reuter says: "We did everything in the last weeks and months to get out of our difficult situation together. After the 4-0 defeat to Hoffenheim and the shaky performances before it, we lacked the conviction that we would manage it with things the way they were."

Schmidt was to take charge of his first training session on Wednesday. The side faces Eintracht Frankfurt away on Sunday before a potentially decisive clash with Stuttgart on April 20.

Six rounds of the league remain altogether.
