3-year prison term for Elgin felon who accidentally shot friend
A 36-year-old Elgin man was sentenced to three years in prison Monday after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm by a felon after his friend was accidentally shot in the leg in April 2017.
Jeffery A. Cohn, of the 100 block of Moseley Street, was set for a jury trial Monday before Kane County Judge D.J. Tegeler on three counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and one count of reckless discharge of a firearm.
Instead, he pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm, a felony punishable by three to seven years in prison, and the remaining charges were dismissed, according to court records.
Cohn, who is free on bond, has until May 13 to surrender to authorities to be taken to prison, records show.
He was arrested in late April 2017 after police were called to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates for a report of a gunshot victim.
The man had serious, but not life-threatening injuries, and officers learned the man had been shot at his friend's house on Moseley Street in Elgin. Police arrested Cohn and obtained a search warrant, finding a 9 mm and .38-caliber handguns and ammunition in the house, authorities said.
Authorities learned Cohn was convicted in 2002 of felony delivery of a controlled substance. As a result, he is prohibited from owning firearms under state law.
Defense attorney Glen Jazwiec could not immediately be reached for comment.
Cohn, who must pay a $910 fine, receives four days credit for time served and can have his sentence cut in half for good behavior while in prison.
