Roommate guilty, another on lam in Batavia burglaries

One of two roommates charged in a series of burglaries netting nearly $3,000 from a Batavia Dunkin' Donuts last year has pleaded guilty, been sentenced to probation and entered drug treatment.

The other missed a mid-March court appearance, and a warrant has been issued for her arrest.

Brittany M. Burris, 24, and Aleksandra A. Kunicka, 26, both of the 200 block of Union Street, Batavia, were arrested in June 2018.

According to court records, the two are accused of entering a Circle K gas station attached to the Dunkin' Donuts, 108 N. Batavia Ave., where they used to work, during the late evening or early morning hours May 31, as well as June 4, 7, 10 and 12, the date they were arrested.

One of them distracted the gas station clerk, while the other entered the Dunkin' Donuts area and grabbed cash kept in a kitchen and office area, according to a police affidavit used to secure a search warrant for Kunicka's 2001 Chevy TrailBlazer and both of their cellphones.

Burris pleaded guilty to felony burglary last week, and prosecutors dismissed remaining charges. As part of her plea, she was sentenced to 180 days at the Kane County jail but had already served 200 days while the charges were pending, records show.

Burris was to enter drug rehabilitation court and comply with all recommendations from an evaluation, as well as random drug tests, according to court records.

She was placed on probation through May 2021. If she violates that, she can be resentenced to up to seven years in prison.

Burris also must pay half of $2,982 in restitution, while Kunicka is responsible for the other half, court records show.

Kunicka was held for several months at the jail until she was released in February 2019 on her own recognizance. However, she failed to attend a March 13 court date, records show. At the time of her arrest, Kunicka was on parole for another burglary.
