Girls soccer: St. Charles schools win openers at own invite
St. Charles North and St. Charles East both won their opening games Wednesday in the Rose Augscburg-Drach Invitational.
The North Stars defeated Cary-Grove 5-1 while St. Charles East knocked off Burlington Central 3-1.
It didn't take long for St. Charles North to get on the board when Samantha Rydberg scored in the second minute on an assist from Kellie Callaghan.
Callaghan also assisted the second goal, this time to Sarah Andrey before Jordan Dale scored for Cary-Grove on an assist by Kelli Ives to bring the Trojans within 2-1 at halftime.
In a five-minute stretch early in the second half, Rydberg, Andrey and Madison Rossi all found the back of the net to put the North Stars up 5-1. Callaghan notched her third assist, and Bridget Wolf and Sophia Hein also had helpers.
In the Saints' win, Emma Blankenship, assisted by Kayla Villa, and Hannah Miller, assisted by Elle McCaslin, gave St. Charles East (8-1) a 2-1 lead at halftime.
McCaslin, assisted by Miller, scored the only goal of the second half. Grace Griffin made 5 saves.
Zoey Kollhoff scored for the Rockets, assisted by Isa Hartmann.
St. Charles East continues pool play Thursday against Bartlett while St. Charles North hosts Schaumburg. The first place team in each pool plays for the championship at 5 p.m. Saturday at St. Charles East.
South Elgin 3, Elgin 2: Nathalia Garfias (free kick) and Maia Lesniak (Morelia González) scored goals for Elgin (3-6, 0-2) while Jackie Solis made 9 saves in goal.
