Palatine man, Plainfield woman identified as drowning victims in DuPage River

The bodies of a 28-year-old Palatine man and his 22-year-old girlfriend have been recovered from the DuPage River in Will County, authorities said Tuesday.

Will County coroner officials said in a news release that initial results show Abraham Ramos of Palatine and Hannah Tammeling of Plainfield died as a result of drowning, authorities said.

They were both pronounced dead April 1 after their bodies were recovered in the river, authorities said.

Cindy Cain, public information officer of the Will County Forest Preserve Police, said witnesses called police at about 5:50 p.m. Sunday after seeing Ramos struggling in the river near a dam in the Hammel Woods Forest Preserve. Tammeling went in the water to assist Ramos, Cain said.

Cain said it is unknown why Ramos went in the water. She said the area is not safe for swimming and signs are posted warning people to stay out of the water.

After the two disappeared, rescue workers from more than 30 fire agencies and 5 police agencies searched the river until roughly 9 p.m. Sunday night but did not locate the victims. The search resumed Monday morning.

Ramos's body was recovered late Monday morning, authorities said. Tammeling's body was recovered at about 2 p.m.

Cain said the two were in a relationship, and that family members told police they would frequently walk through forest preserves together.
