Girls soccer: Farrell's hat trick leads Geneva past Streamwood

Geneva used a speedy offense to score eight first half goals on its way to an 8-0 nonconference win over Streamwood Tuesday night at Burgess Field.

Geneva moved the ball quickly down field and got behind the Sabres' defense for uncontested shots on goal.

Six Vikings scored in the match.

"Our offense looked real good out there. They were clicking. They were doing a real good job of playing as a team and playing off each other. We scored all eight goals in the first half which is great," said Geneva coach Megan Owens.

"I saw a lot of quality things. I thought our offense played very unselfishly which was good to see and they didn't force their shots, so a lot of positives as we build into our first conference game on Thursday night in our new conference against Wheaton Warrenville South."

Senior Caitlin Farrell led the attack with three goals.

"That's my first hat trick," Farrell said. "It feels real good but I couldn't have done it without my team. We have been working in practice to not be selfish around the ball and playing the most dangerous ball possible."

The four-year varsity player put Geneva (3-1-1) on the scoreboard in the third minute of the game. Farrell, just outside the penalty box, took a cross from Stephanie Howe and found the back of the net.

Ten minutes later, Sydney Gratz beat Streamwood (1-5) keeper Candy Nava to a loose ball and booted it in.

Farrell scored back-to-back goals in the 16th and 18th minutes of the match.

Alana Rawls converted a penalty kick with 18 minutes left in the half to put Geneva up 5-0.

Jenna Dominquez, Chloe Frison and Howe also scored for the Vikings.

"We have a very young team, a lot of freshmen, so we are still working on building team chemistry and everything," said Sabres coach Kristin Duffy.

Farrell and most of the Geneva starters watched the second half from the sidelines as Owens used the team's comfortable lead to give all of her reserves playing time.

"Everybody played," Owen said. "We got everyone on the field with a lot of quality minutes so a lot of good experience."

Streamwood's best scoring opportunity came in the 50th minute. From 20 yards out in front of the goal, Diana Herrera took a shot but Vikings keeper Paige MacRitchie stopped it.
