Measure ourselves on basis of love, not hate

As Martin Luther King Jr tells us, "the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

In these times of challenge and controversy, when our Muslim brothers and sisters are killed while worshipping halfway around the world, we have the chance to create our "measure" based on love and peace, not hate and ignorance.

How do we do that halfway around the world? Here are just a few ideas: Support our local Muslim neighbors, allowing them to feel safe in our own Northwest suburbs. Advocate for the creation and enforcement of common-sense gun laws at the city, state and federal levels. Speak up when disparaging comments about Muslims, Jews, African-Americans and marginalized groups are made in conversations with friends and colleagues. Get involved with local organizations that support your values and beliefs.

As we are all saddened and shocked by the horror of the Christchurch events, and we send our love and prayers to New Zealand, we know that only we can change the world - with one act of love, peace, and support at a time.
