LB Brendan Ferns ends WVU career

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia linebacker Brendan Ferns says he's accepted a medical scholarship and will not play football in his final two seasons of eligibility.

The junior made the announcement Wednesday on Twitter.

Ferns missed the entire 2016 season and most of the past two seasons with injuries.

He was a standout at St. Clairsville High in Ohio.

Ferns says, "These past three years at WVU were not how I envisioned them, but life happens. Eventually, every athlete will have to hang it up, but some do sooner than others. Unfortunately, this is the end, but I wouldn't change anything about my three years here at WVU."
