Theater spotlight: Family-friendly shows 'Jungle Book' at the Metropolis, 'Edward Tulane' at Filament Theatre

'Jungle Book'

AlphaBet Soup Productions brings “The Jungle Book” - adapted from Rudyard Kipling's novel about young Mowgli, who's raised by wolves with help from a bear named Baloo and a panther named Bagheera - to the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre as part of its Stories in Action! series. Suitable for kindergarten through third grade, the interactive production also includes songs and dances.

'Emma' re-imagined

Williams Street Repertory re-imagines “Emma,” about a precocious, privileged young woman who arranges her friends' romances, as a pop musical set to tunes including Katy Perry's “Roar,” Pat Benatar's “Heartbreaker” and Cyndi Lauper's “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” In this version, directed by Metropolis Performing Arts Centre director and casting director Robin M. Hughes, Emma is a high school senior out to find the perfect boyfriend for a shy sophomore.

A rabbit's tale

Edward Tulane, an expensive china rabbit owned by a little girl named Abilene, is accidentally lost at sea while his owner is on a transatlantic voyage in Kate DiCamillo's children's tale “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.” Filament Theatre's production was adapted by Dwane Hartford, artistic director of Childsplay in Tempe, Arizona. Nik Kmiecik stars as the Musician and the voice of Edward.
