Softball: Brown's single gives Grayslake North walk-off win

Grace Brown's walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning capped a 4-run rally, as Grayslake North's softball team defeated Homewood-Flossmoor 6-5 in Orland, Fla., Monday.

Faith Standerski, who went 4-for-5 with a double and 2 RBI, drove in the tying run with a ringing double. Brown followed with a hit that landed just beyond the glove of the diving center fielder. Meghan Delahunty (3-for-5, 2 RBI), Caitlin Barenbaum (2-for-3, double), Nicole Hughes (2-for-4, double, RBI) and Scout Kram (2-for-3, walk) all had multiple hits for the Knights.

Emily Mack got the win, throwing 2 innings in relief of Evan Garrett (5 innings, 4 runs, 2 earned, 2 strikeouts, 5 hits, 0 walks). Grayslake North (2-3) resumes play Tuesday at 4 p.m. against Marshfield (Wis.).

Vernon Hills wins twice: In Alabama, Elisa Handler went 6-for-6 in a pair of games, as the Cougars won twice in the Gulf Shores tournament.

Handler was 3-for-3 with 2 stolen bases and an RBI in a 6-5 win over Haleyville. Vernon Hills won in walk-off fashion, scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth. Rachel Wright, Sarah Monteith and Brook Pieper all doubled.

Handler went 3-for-3 again, doubling in one of her at-bats, as the Cougars beat Pleasant Grove 10-3. Mackenzie Mahler was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI, and Wright doubled again. Pieper pitched 4⅔ innings, allowing 1 run and striking out five.

Carmel loses twice: In Alabama, the Corsairs lost 5-0 to Hayden and 5-4 to John Carroll in international tiebreaker.

Carmel plays Oak Mountain at 8 a.m. Tuesday and Ohatchee at 9 a.m.

Libertyville 10, Poly Prep (New York) 0: On Sunday, the Wildcats earned their first win of the season, as winning pitcher Amanda Page (1-0) allowed just 1 hit in 5 innings, striking out eight and not walking a batter.

Page also went 2-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI. Libertyville also got contributions from Lexi Hill (1-for-4, double, 2 RBI), Maggie Evers (1-for-4, double), Aliya Haddon (1-for-4, double), Katie Jahncke (3-for-3) and Emma Fields (3-for-3, double, 2 RBI).
