Officer, motorist accused of driving drunk hurt in crash

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Authorities say an Indianapolis police officer and a motorist accused of driving drunk lost consciousness and were hurt after a crash involving their vehicles.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said in a release that both were injured early Sunday and taken to hospitals. The driver is in serious condition and the officer is expected to recover after an unspecified surgery.

Investigators say the driver of a Chevrolet Impala turned left in front of the officer's car, which was proceeding on a green light, and struck it. Both cars spun and hit utility poles.

Police say the motorist told officers he drank alcohol earlier, though investigators await blood-test results to determine whether charges will be filed.

The release says it's the third accident since December involving an Indianapolis police officer and someone accused of drunken driving.
