Work starts on covered bridge near span destroyed by fire

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Work has begun on a covered bridge near the site of a span destroyed decades ago by fire in southern Indiana's Monroe County.

Workers used cranes Friday to move the bridge's wooden frame into place across Beanblossom Creek, a few miles north of Bloomington. The 127-foot-long span is being built near the site of a covered bridge destroyed by fire in 1976.

The Herald-Times reports that crews are using materials from the Cedar Ford Bridge, which was built in 1885 in Shelby County but dismantled in 1975. Federal money is covering 80 percent of the $1.6 million project.

When the bridge is completed, it will become the only covered bridge in Monroe County, which once had as many as 14 covered bridges.
