Baseball: Vernon Hills trio throws combined no-hitter
Derek Jarrell, Jack Peterson and Logan Coty combined on a no-hitter, as Vernon Hills' baseball team beat Zion-Benton 15-5 in five innings Friday.
On a day that featured a subfreezing windchill, the two teams combined to walk 19 batters and hit three.
Quinn Geren (2-for-3, run, 2 RBI) and Jack Barsczc (2-for-3, run, 3 RBI) led the way offensively for the Cougars, who improved to 3-0. Ethan Bowers had a key triple, and Kaden Zahnow had a two-out pinch-hit single that drove in two runs.
Vernon Hills will host Round Lake on Saturday.
Grant 8, Harlem 6: The host Bulldogs improved to 2-0, as Danny Laughery went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and 3 stolen bases. Jimmy Taylor went 1-for-3 with a double, and Carlos Martinez finished 2-for-3, with an RBI.
Mikal Ashley earned the win, striking out five in 2⅓ innings. Henry Kusiak struck out one in 1 inning for the save.
Mundelein 4, Wauconda 3: A 3-run top of the sixth was the difference for the Mustangs in their nonconference win.
Jared Dorfman (2-for-4, double) and Mason Schultz (1-for-3) each drove in 2 runs for Mundelein, and TJ Yakimisky was 2-for-3. Drake Morton doubled.
Jonathan Hanscom pitched 3 no-hit innings for the Mustangs, but Jake Devine (⅔ innings pitched) earned the win.
Wauconda got doubles from Luke Dubach (2 RBI) and Riley Kirk.
