2 Franklin schools closed after tests for contaminants

FRANKLIN, Ind. (AP) - Two Indiana schools are closed for the day after tests revealed contaminants under concrete floors.

Franklin Superintendent David Clendening says he kept students away from Needham Elementary and Webb Elementary on Thursday "due to an overabundance of caution." The Daily Journal says tests revealed higher-than-recommended levels of volatile organic compounds.

Samples were taken March 2 by EnviroForsensics. The Indianapolis company took vapor samples from below concrete floors. Some samples exceeded standards set by state regulators.

The district, 25 miles south of Indianapolis, is on spring break next week. More tests will be conducted while students are away.

Students worked on online lessons while schools were closed.
