East Leyden counselor recognized by the College Board

Alicia Funes, a counselor at East Leyden, is being recognized by the 2019

College Board Recognition Program for her work with students.

She was nominated for her exemplary work as a professional school counselor by Karen Ritter, an assistant principal at the school.

The program highlights the work of innovative, results-oriented high school and middle school counselors who exemplify excellence and commitment to students' academic success and access to post secondary choices.

Funes, who has been a counselor at the East campus for four years, says she is honored to receive the recognition. "Leyden students are so special, and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to make an impact on their future," says Funes, who is a member of the student services department. "Within the last few years, the department has been very intentional about our mission that all students have equal access to post secondary options, and have a viable plan in place upon graduation."

In order to be eligible for the program, the nominee must provide direct guidance and counseling services for a caseload of students and their families. The individual also must be a master's degree-level educator serving as a full time counselor in a public, private or independent school located in the United States.

Selection criteria includes examination of an individual's leadership and advocacy skills; and the ability to develop and coordinate collaborative partnerships that help increase equity in college and career readiness, especially in underrepresented populations.
